Only after arriving in Washington, did Wheeler discover the document was missing. It was never found.
President-elect, General Dwight D. Eisenhower was furious. After Eisenhower’s inauguration, amazingly, nothing happened! There was a reprimand, but it was soon forgotten. Eight month’s later, the Soviet Union exploded its first thermonuclear device. Wheeler kept his security clearance, and he continued to work at the highest level on the hydrogen bomb.
An easy read that explains Wheeler’s improbable immunity; The Matterhorn Paradox is set in a fictional reality consistent with much of the physics Wheeler himself introduced. It is a story of sabotage, espionage, conspiracy to murder, and, of course, time travel.

What if the colonization of a large portion of North America had been dominated by one of Europe’s small nations instead of, as actually happened, by the great powers of France, Britain and Spain?
Specifically, Denmark. In real history, Denmark did have a few small settlements in the Caribbean, but they never amounted to much. But what if, given the very different parameters of the power equations produced by the arrival of Grantville, Denmark had been able to dominate a large portion of what is today called “Canada”?
The possible ramifications were fascinating to me. A nation like early 17th century Denmark didn’t have the military power or the population to simply overwhelm the indigenous peoples of North America. Willy-nilly, whether they wanted to or not, Danish settlers would have to develop a modus vivendi with the people they encountered in the New World. The hybrid societies which the French settlements originally produced such as the metis, which were cut short by the British victory in the Seven Years War, might have emerged and become more stable and long-lasting.
Who could say? It seemed to me that Herb’s project was interesting enough to support—and no matter what the final outcome, was bound to produce a number of good stories.
So, here we are, with the second volume of that project. I hope you enjoy it.

In this metaphysical time-traveling tale, four modern-day British children discover that strange things can happen when you open your mind and follow your heart.
The story begins with researcher-writer ‘Gran’ and her dog Tess as they collect eight-year old Erynn Hanlon from the village school. Erynn’s curiosity is just as big as her heart, and she devours Gran’s stories about real people who lived long ago.
When she asks Gran about the fate of Jake, Anna and Ben Lillie, three pioneer children that lost their parents in a tragic river-crossing accident, Gran can’t answer. No archives of the Lillie family remain. This prompts Erynn to seek help from Echo, a Native American spirit, who guides her through the ‘shimmering’ and back to the 1845 Oregon Trail.
One by one, Erynn and her siblings pledge to stay with the Lillie children, but soon realize they can’t be seen or heard by the pioneers. They must hover like spirits as the children walk beside covered wagons for 2,400 miles through Indian Territory with its wide prairies, scorching deserts, treacherous river crossings and rugged mountain ranges.
On the journey they encounter delightful herds of wild animals, haunted rocky outcrops, poisonous rattlesnakes, swarming insects, whitewater rapids and many other dangers. Friendships with Native Americans are forged and numerous lessons learned. The Lillie children’s grit and determination conquer enormous obstacles, but will they get to Oregon? Will they even survive?
