So here we are with Jamie and Claire headed off to begin another new adventure together. They begin by wrapping up the odds and ends they have in town. Jamie signs away his land that was given to him by Governor Tryon so that he and Claire can find their new life together elsewhere. As he is doing this, Claire and Marsali have an emotional conversation about Marslali missing her mother. Claire can identify with her feelings very well being that she misses Brianna so much. Both have a void to be filled and I think this moment between Claire and Marsali shows how the two of them can help each other through their losses.
I loved the touching moment between Jamie and Claire as Claire talks of how she misses Brianna. Claire goes on to say how she fears that the lack of her presence in their daughter’s life will be detrimental for her. Jamie tries to comfort her with his words. He says, “When I was without you…I held onto thoughts of your face, your words, your heart. I clung to those memories when I didn’t want to stand and I was thankful for them when I could. Our daughter will do the same.” It’s beautiful to me the way Jamie seems to always know what to say to Claire to help her through any rough moment she has.

Jamie, Claire and Ian settle on a piece of land that they decide to call their own, Jamie carves “FR” into a tree for “Fraser’s Ridge.” They start to do what they need to for the beginnings of building a home when they are confronted with Indians. Once Jamie says who he is, though, the Indians back away. It was confusing for me why they did this.
Suddenly we are taken to Oxford University in 1971 where Roger picks a book and begins to read about Fraser’s Ridge and the history behind it. He discovers that Jamie and Claire found each other and that they had a life together. He’s so excited that he makes a call to Brianna to tell her. The look on her face is priceless as she listens to Roger speak on the phone. I could feel her relief and the immense joy she had in her heart knowing that her parents were alive together.
But it was heartbreaking when it was time for Roger to say goodbye… I feel Roger is being so unfair to Brianna. I think for him to say “marry me or nothing at all” is ridiculous. Sometimes it takes the other person a little longer to get to the marry me stage and personally, their relationship is so new that it’s no wonder Brianna isn’t there yet. Clearly, though, she has deep feelings for Roger and he’s missing out on them all because he has to have her as his wife. (Okay, hopping off my soap box…)
Back to Jamie and Claire: They are once again confronted by the Indians and once again no harm is done to them. But once it turns dark, their camp is attacked and all of their supplies are stolen. Their horse returns with slashes in his body and Claire says that a bear has been there. They begin to take better care of their surroundings and take more precautions to secure their land but later that night, they discover just what has been causing them trouble. Instead of a bear, it is an outcast Indian dressed as a bear. Jamie fights and is scratched by the Indian but Jamie ends up spearing him to his death.

The next day the Cherokee find Jamie and ask him if he had killed the man dressed as a bear. When Jamie said he had, they are pleased since the man was an outcast to their people. From then on out Jamie is known as “Bear Killer” to the Indians and there is peace between them. Claire makes friends with an elderly Indian woman who is not only a healer herself but somewhat of a psychic. She tells Claire of a dream she had of her and at the end of the dream, she adds, “Death is sent from the gods. It will not be your fault.” Claire is troubled by this (as was I to be honest!) but does not get any further information.
With Roger again, he discovers that Fiona knows about the fact that Claire is a time traveler. As surprising as it is for him, Fiona is not phased from the information being that her grandmother was part of the stones rituals and heard about people disappearing all the time! But in hesitation, Fiona shows Roger a document from Jamie and Claire’s time reporting of their deaths. The date is smudged so the exact timing of their deaths is not known but the one thing that is known is that there is a gap of a twelve year time period in which they have to discover their deaths.
Back in Fraser’s Ridge, Jamie has started the foundation of their cabin. He swoops up Claire into his arms, describing to her in detail about their new life in their new home. It’s so romantic and yet, with the news of their deaths on the horizon, it has a sadness about it as well…
With an obvious heaviness in Roger’s heart, he makes a phone call to tell Brianna that her parents will die…only to discover from Gail, Bri’s roommate, that she has gone to Scotland to see her mother. What will this mean for Roger? What will this mean for Bri? I can’t wait to find out!
