Welcome back Roger and Brianna!
It was good to see the love birds back together again! (Who else was amused by the fact they were eating Dairy Queen in the car?) I love the relationship between Bri and Roger because it’s playful and romantic all at the same time. Roger is so serious where Brianna has a lot of her father’s child-like flirtation and her mother’s independent spirit. Yet the combination is perfect between the them. It was so adorable the way Brianna says “Shut up and kiss me!” then kisses Roger almost causing him to swerve while driving.
Although, before we see Roger and Bri reunited, we are taken back to River Run where Jamie and Claire are bidding Aunt Jocasta Cameron goodbye. Jamie decides not to take over managing the estate and instead head onward to find a home for him and Claire in North Carolina. The farewell between Claire and Jocasta is not a friendly one but I admire Claire, as always, for standing strong in what she believes. My favorite part of this exchange comes from Claire when she responds firmly, “You haven’t seen Jamie since he was a boy and you’ve known us together all of a few days. And you know nothing about me or my husband.” She has a way of getting her point across without needing to raise her voice yet it has just about the same effect with how sharp her tone comes across.
As usual, that sweet moment between Jamie and Claire as they sit together by the fire, makes me smile. Jamie tells Claire that they would be to their destination soon. Claire says, “That’s alright. I rather enjoy being under the stars.” Then Jamie responds, “Aye. Are you sure you wouldn’t rather go to a place that you’re more familiar with? Boston? Say somewhere we could start anew.” Claire looks at him with question and says, “Boston? That would hardly be starting anew…for me at least. I’ve already had a life there…” Then smiles and says, “I want us to make a home together. A place that’s ours.” Jamie returns the smile and says, “Aye.” Their understanding of one another is beautiful.
The next day Claire and Jamie are riding horses and talking about Claire’s intent on being a doctor. She tells Jamie she always knew she wanted to be a doctor but Brianna was much like Frank and she fears that she only chose history to please her father and not because of the passion behind it. After this Jamie mentions finding shelter because of the storm coming in. This is where we see a rare moment where Claire is humorous in her reply. “Or perhaps a quaint brothel.” Jamie smirks saying, “You’ll hold that over me forever, Sassenach?” (She replies, “Not forever.” Such a funny reminder that Jamie used to live in a brothel in Season 3.) When the storm comes in, the supply donkey runs off at the sound of the thunder, and Claire jumps on a horse to chase after him against Jamie’s wishes…
Now we are back in Boston with Brianna and Roger where they are enjoying themselves at the Scottish festival. As they are walking through the crowds, Roger asks Brianna if it is upsetting for her to be there. Brianna replies, “No, no it just it does make me think of my mother. I wonder if she ever made it back, found Jamie, if she’s happy…” Roger sweetly replies, “I like to believe she did.” After this they get their portrait taken which is so cute especially since it clearly makes Roger uncomfortable yet he does it for her anyway. The Scottish dance that Brianna and Roger do together afterwards reminds me a lot of the scene in “Titanic” where Jack and Rose dance below deck. Could this be a sign of true love in the future for Bri and Roger?
There is a lot of flashing back and forth in this episode as we are taken back to Claire falling off her horse and being knocked unconscious as the storm rages on.
Roger performs on stage and Brianna watches with such longing on her face. I think it is here she finds herself feeling more deeply for him than she wants to admit or even wants to at all. Then after the show, Bri and Roger go to her room to drink the mountain moonshine she gifted to Roger. Without warning, Brianna begins to undress and make obvious advances to sleeping with him but Roger stops her and says, “I want this to be perfect.” She replies, “It is…perfect…” But he pulls her up off the floor, wraps her shirt around her, sits her down on the couch and gives her a jewelry box. When Bri opens it, she discovers a bracelet with french writing engraved into it. Roger then goes on to propose to her but Brianna refuses him. (This was crushing for me to watch.) The fact that he explains how he will not sleep with her unless she marries him was so romantic but Bri didn’t feel the same. The entire situation between Brianna and Roger in this moment was intense and heartbreaking. Especially when she slaps him after he makes a vulgar comment about having her on backside.
Getting back to poor Claire lost in the woods…. It’s dark now and it’s pouring down rain. She wakes up and finds shelter under some brush. Then as she is sitting there, she finds a skull (I can’t believe she picked up that nasty thing with her bare hands!) under the leaves and a beautiful stone next to it. When the lightening starts flashing and the Indian appeared, I had a hard time understanding the meaning behind this. Of course, we later find out that the skull had a silver filling in it’s tooth which could only mean the person was a time traveler…I wonder who it is…
We end this episode with Jamie and Claire standing on the ledge overlooking the land that they would call home. Jamie says, “Do you trust me, Claire?” She says yes and then he replies, “Then this will be our home and we’ll call it…Fraser’s Ridge.”
