Over the last few months, Ginger Hoesly has been putting together a charity fanzine, “The Hybrid” which features stories on the 12th Doctor (played by Peter Capaldi) and Clara Oswald.
Let me introduce you to this fabulous creator before we talk about her zine.
Ginger Hoesly is an illustrator, graphic designer, the co-creator of the light novel series Owl’s Flower, and a person who will eagerly talk to you about baseball for hours on end (go Cubs goooooo). Her illustrative work has appeared at San Diego ComicCon, on tour at the Doctor Who World Tour, on television with BBC America’s Doctor’s Notes, in an episode of The Doctor Who Fan Show as accompanying illustrations for “The Gift” short story, been featured on the website “Anglophenia”, and on a social media account near you originating from either @randomthunk or @Kataoi. Her design portfolio includes work for hospitality, education, non-profits, small businesses, conventions, and maybe most widely spread, the “Thank God and Scotland for Peter Capaldi” t-shirt.
She took some time to sit down and talk about her project.
1) Tells us about the Hybrid, what is it and how did it come to be?
The Hybrid is a charity fanzine focusing on the 12th Doctor and Clara Oswald. A friend of mine has been heavily involved in the zine scene for about a year and kept telling me to do one, so in early summer I went “fine fine fine, I’ll do an interest check on this one thing I’m a passionate fan of”. As it turns out, people were interested, so I decided to go for it.
2) How can people get it?

3) Tell us about the charity this is for and how you came to choose them.
The One to One Children’s Fund is a UK-based charity that works with mothers, infants, and children in impoverished parts of the world to provide medical aid, assistance, and education. They are a charity with which Jenna Coleman is an ambassador for, and I wanted to tie in a charity that related to the actors whose characters we made a zine for.
4) There are different tiers people can order, some of which include some pretty cool artwork, can you tell us about that?
I am a big big fan of merch, probably because of how I grew up as an anime fan and went to cons at an early age and became spoiled with imports and artist’s alley stuff. I’ve always seen fan merch as a unique consumer good that is made with a passion and oftentimes, a thing that fills in the gap where official merch doesn’t do anything. The BBC produced a paltry amount for the 12 era when it comes to these things, so I and a good number of our zine artists are actually some folks who stepped up to make things for fans. Prints, charms, pins, stickers, shirts, we made it. So with that being said, I wanted to include those fun things in a merchandise bundle for the zine, and give another excuse to produce more fun 12 and Clara and Doctor Who content.
5) You have both writers and artists in this collection, can you tease some of it for us?
There’s stuff that’s cute and quiet, there’s things that are funny and more like shenanigans, there’s some kind of dark and introspective stuff – I think that because of the nature of stuff that was dealt with in series 8 and series 9, that inspired people to have at it and create about whatever they wanted.
6) What has been your favorite part about putting this zine together?
I’m one of those fans who has seen everything of the thing I enjoy, and voraciously consume any fan merch created, eagerly share fanart, enjoying reading fanfic, and love to make things myself. I’ve loved being able to see everything created, from people I know and people I have just met, and also see how excited the contributors for this project are too. When you do what I do – decide to head a zine all by yourself – it’s a huge task and can be daunting when you list out everything that needs to be accomplished. But having passionate creators who are just as pumped for this as you are makes it exciting and a dream to work on and pull off.
