After nine seasons, Family Guy had laid plenty of groundwork for time travel in the series (see the first half of our video list in last month’s post). In the latter half of the series, Brian and Stewie are so used to using Stewie’s time machine that they think nothing of a casual trip to address a momentary whim. No more instances of Peter asking Death to show him an earlier point in time – the time machine becomes the only method used for time travel in the show.
Brian and Stewieare now the primary time travelers, although Peter does travel once accidentally and on one occasion they take an oblivious Chris along for the ride. In these later episodes, we see what happens when time starts to run backwards, what happens when Stewie is removed from the timeline, and even if its possible to bring back a character who has died – RIP Brian (briefly).
So, take a glimpse at these clips from seasons 9-14…
Season 9, Episode 16 - The Big Bang Theory
Through an accident while Stewie and Brain are fighting in Stewie's time machine, the two are inadvertently thrown out of the time-space continuum. Their attempt to get home creates an explosion which apparently initiated the Big Bang.
Season 10, Episode 5 - Back to the Pilot
While on a trip back in time to their pilot episode, Brian and Stewie inadvertently alter the timeline in a devastating way. They go back to warn themselves, and then get a warning of their own.
Season 10, Episode 22 - Family Guy Viewer Mail, No. 2
Stewie goes back in time to intervene in Kurt Cobain's suicide.
Season 10, Episode 23 - Internal Affairs
During one of Peter's all-out brawls with the giant chicken, they inadvertently travel back in time to the old west, returning home with Marty McFly in the train-propelled DeLorean.
Season 11, Episode 4 - Yug Yilmaf
Brian accidentally reverses the flow of time when he tampers with Stewie's time machine. Classic quote - "What kind of jerk alters time and then falls asleep?"
Season 11, Episode 12 - Valentine's Day in Qhahog
While traveling back in time to 1967 (the "Summer of Love"), Stewie feels compelled to kiss a toddler girl, but then learns that she is a very young Lois.
Season 12, Episode 6 - Life of Brian
To fix a timeline they created by tampering with the past, Stewie and Brian must travel to colonial Jamestown and prevent the native Americans of that time from using machine guns that Stewie gave them in the previous trip.
Season 12, Episode 7 - Christmas Guy
After seeing Brian die in a previous episode, Stewie finds a way to return to the past to save him, even though Stewie has destroyed his time machine. After changing the past, Stewie fades from the timeline.
Season 12, Episode 21 - Chap Stewie
Fed up having been born into a "family of morons", Stewie rebuilds his time machine and decides to erase his existence from the timeline by breaking up Peter and Lois before he was conceived.
Season 13, Episode 7 - Stewie, Chris and Brian's Excellent Adventure
When Chris looks like he is going to flunk his history exam, Stewie and Brian help him prepare with an educational tour through history. If only they didn't wind up on the Titanic with no option for a trip home.

Craig is the founder and creator of TimeTravelNexus.com. He first stumbled upon a time machine in Boys Life magazine in the early 1970's, and many time trips later, he has lost track of his original timeline. He spends his days with his wife and young son in the timeline he now considers "home". A chance encounter with a future self alerted him to one possible future in which he becomes a published novelist, although whether or not that is a future of his current timeline remains to be seen.
