Crossed Trails
Bob Blink
12/1/2017, Science Fiction/Western

Heck and Silas were independent prospectors in the old west, prowling the wilderness in search of that elusive strike that would make them rich. Then they discovered two dead men in a strange vehicle. The bodies were nearly severed in two by an unknown means inside the remarkable contraption where they had been found.

After burying the two corpses, they had searched the vehicle for clues as to who the men might have been. While they found no leads, they did find a stash of very unusual gold, and a number of weapons of unfamiliar design, which they could see no reason to leave behind. The gold they sold. The weapons they carried with them.

Several adventuresome years later, their wandering having taken them to the cattle town of Dodge City, they were stunned to encounter the two men they had buried on their way out of the Dakotas. Equally impossible, the two clearly knew who Heck and Silas were. After a couple of strange meetings with the impossible pair, they parted after exchanging gunfire.

Heck and Silas fled into the wilds, hoping never to encounter the pair again. It was not to work out that way, as over the next decade, they were to meet several times again, each time the pair seeming different, and totally unconcerned over the bad blood under which they had parted that first time. Clearly Thompson and Sanders, as the men were known, wanted something from them.

Silas believed they wanted the gold taken from the vehicle where they’d first found the two strangers, but Heck was convinced something far more impossible was taking place. The question hanging over their heads, was whether it would be Heck and Silas, or Thompson and Sanders, who would be the survivors of the repeating encounters.

1636: The Vatican Sanctions (Ring of Fire, Book 24)
Eric Flint
12/5/2017, Alternate History

Seven days in May 1636

It’s spring in Burgundy. The flowers are out and so are the cardinals—of Pope Urban’s renegade papacy, now on the run from the Vatican’s would-be usurper Borja. Most of the Church’s senior leaders have converged upon the city of Besancon, where the Pope plans to offer an ecumenical olive branch to the other Christian denominations with which Rome has been at war.

Fortunately, Urban has up-time help. He can rely upon Cardinal-Protector Larry Mazzare’s theological savvy, Sharon Nichols’ medical skills, and her husband Ruy Sanchez’s keen-eyed experience as a body-guard-in-chief. And even though Urban has a new Papal Guard in the form of Owen Rowe O’Neill’s Wild Geese, Mike Stearns has loaned the Pope a small contingent of the Hibernian Battalion—just in case.

Which is prudent, since Urban and his peace initiative are not merely at risk from Borja’s assassins. There is another, more deadly, team of professional killers in town, directed by the man who almost killed the Pope before: lethal Spanish mastermind Pedro Dolor.

Dolor hasn’t come to confess murder—he’s come to commit it.

But when she runs into Robert in this lifetime, a whirlwind of their past lives—and deaths—rocks her modern world to the core. What will she be willing to risk to spend every lifetime with Robert?

She’s also a member of Annum Guard, a secret government organization that travels through time to alter the course of history.

But on her last mission, Amanda made a horrible mistake. She traveled to the past and accidentally caused the death of her boyfriend Abe’s grandfather—completely erasing Abe from existence and launching herself into a parallel universe where her father is very much alive.

Desperate to set things right, Amanda is forced to go on the defensive. She must play a dangerous cat-and-mouse game with her own father as she navigates an unfamiliar Annum Guard in order to save Abe. But the further in she gets, the more she realizes that nothing is as it seems. Her father isn’t quite the monster she’d always assumed. Her mother is stable, healthy, and loving. She has real, genuine friends.

Before she knows it, Amanda finds herself in an impossible predicament—stay and live the life she’s always wanted, or return to her own timeline to give Abe the life he deserves? In this gripping conclusion to the Annum Guard series, playing with time can have deadly consequences.

Crazy sounds like the woman on the radio claiming there’s a whole separate world existing parallel to our own. Still, Tanzy can’t deny the tingle of recognition she feels each time she sees her mother standing at the kitchen window, or hears the panic in the woman’s voice coming through the speakers of her father’s truck.

Tanzy intends to follow her father’s footsteps into the professional horse world. But the moment she watches him die on the back of a horse in an accident she feels responsible for, everything changes. On the first anniversary of his death, a fight with her mother drives her back to her father’s farm in the middle of a stormy night. Neither Tanzy nor life as she knows it escapes unchanged when she is struck by lightning and introduced to a world… unseen, and receives proof her father’s death was no accident.

Two strangers seem too willing to help her navigate her new reality: Vanessa Andrews, a psychiatrist who believes lightning chooses who it strikes, and Lucas, a quiet, scarred stable hand with timing that borders on either perfect or suspect. A Stitch in Time
Senan Gil Senan
12/8/2017, Short Story Collection, Science Fiction

Six thought-provoking stories from six different genres bound by one principle – Time.

TIMELESS:
This is a heartfelt story of a child that is left feeling disassociated from life following the physical impact of an explosion and the resultant emotional trauma from the death of his mother. The story of his life unfolds as he recounts it during his final timeless moment, one of the many that befall him, causing the world around him to slow to a standstill. All these timeless moments seem to be inextricably linked in his life and anchored to one seminal event. That being the moment he first falls in love with a soul mate that makes him feel included and at peace with this heartless world which he has always despised.

CLOCKS SLAY TIME:
A bizarre corruption in his consciousness leaves a man experiencing his life in a non-sequential jumbled order. Despite not being able to remember his name or even where he lives, he manages to get by living only in the moment. Until he encounters a particular girl who by just being in her company, allows him to make sense of his confused existence. This is a love story set against a background of distorted time. The non-sequential order of the chapter numbers reflects this, although this story can also be re-read by following the 11 chapters in sequential number order. It then becomes a completely different story; it is a matter of perspective.
EPSILON:
An exorcist encounters a man of whom it is unclear whether he is possessed or suffering from some kind of psychosis. This is a modern horror story which shows how distorted reality can be just as frightening as the depths of hell.
HELLO FRIEND:
When the world’s leading social network rolls out an artificially intelligent App aimed at engaging the lonelier and more socially challenged people in society, strange results enfold. Is this just a clever program or has the artificially intelligent computer program become sentient and is directing events in their lives?
This tale tells the story of a disparate set of characters who without knowledge of each other, become entwined in each other’s lives, like pawns being moved by a chess-master.
HOLD THE BRIDGE:
A female officer is unexpectedly awakened from deep stasis, two and a half years early on a long distance space voyage. She is joined by another crewman who is also oblivious to the reason for their premature awakening. They can return to stasis sleep but decide instead to investigate first, searching for any anomalies or problems that might need their direct intervention. Events induce a sense of paranoia when it becomes evident that they are not alone and an alien entity might be onboard and impersonating both of them. As the senior officer, it is imperative that she secures and holds the Command Bridge of the vessel against all odds.
THE FALL AND RISE OF THE EL:
The EL is an advanced race of timeless spiritual light beings that think and act collectively and have been assigned a protective role over a particular solar system. They must initiate and oversee the restoration of a frozen planet which once supported much life. Once its ice has retreated, their stewardship requires many of their collective to descend substantially in vibration and take up mortal physicality in order to carry out their duty on the dense planet below. However, divisions in their unity and purpose arise after they opt to manipulate the genetics of one particular species in order to turn them into a helper race of infertile automatons to which they can delegate much of their menial tasks. The heavy density of this world causes the EL many difficulties, one of which is a growing sense of individuality which threatens their collective consciousness. This individuality also threatens to infect the helper race who have been infused with DNA from the EL.

Time Traveling, Savior Cloning, Plus Other Inadvisable Feats (Harry Dandruff Universe, Book 1)
Doug Knell
12/14/2017, Science Fiction/Humor

Einstein’s Theory of Relativity amazingly proved that time is relative, especially so in humorous books. Ipso facto, this comedy scifi book on time is relatively amazing.

Once upon a time, but not in this time, in a comedy adventure dealing intimately with time, a woman could find love in the arms of a robot; a man could find death in the jaws of a genetically engineered lock picking reptile; and the dead could find a reprieve from the boredom of Eternity with the Land of the Living just a collect call away.

The handful of the world’s mega-corporations, for which most everyone works, own all the world’s nations. No one knows anymore if they’re part of a comedy troupe or a future apocalypse.

This funny world of action & adventure connects:

  • Professor Harry Dandruff, a wealthy inventor with hair problems and a questionable past
  • His six clones with abundant problems of their own
  • A run-of-the-mill everyman-loser who’s just officially died and has nothing left to unofficially live for
  • A humorous, lazy, and leering President of the United States, trying to do the minimum for his legacy in the history books
  • A megalomaniac with a fake Ph.D and a plan to control the world’s religions by cloning their symbolic mascots
  • A comedy rivalry between the Gay Brigade and the Lesbian Lineup for world domination – or world apocalypse
  • A secret network of railtimeways spanning the eons

Decades ago, Professor Dandruff secretly cloned himself, with varying degrees of success, and learned the hard way that living with multiple underachieving clones gets you quite sick of yourself very, very quickly.

Now somehow, a religion entrepreneur knows all and is blackmailing the Professor to travel back in time with him for samples of Mr. Christ’s DNA to clone for a new enterprise. In this epochal comedy adventure of literal soul searching, the very fabric of reality and continuity is at the risk of being compromised.

Every President in funny novels learns that carrying the weight of the world for a single day can be murder on the upper back. Professor Harry Dandruff in this novel is about to learn that carrying the weight of the world across a few thousand years can be just plain murder.

The Professor has many accomplished feats to his name. A lot of them are inadvisable. Without a little luck and some dazzling ingenuity ahead and behind him in time, the Professor’s next inadvisable feat looks set to be his last.

Improbable Nazi (Parallel Nazi, Book 2)
Ward Wagher
12/15/2017, Young Adult, Science Fiction/Alternate History

In this world he is a senior Nazi, and is able to use his knowledge of history to guide the nation along a dramatically different path.

And now, as Chancellor of the Reich, he discovers he has changed the world so dramatically that his knowledge of history, as he knew it, no longer helps. He must now govern by his wits and ruthlessness. He must manipulate the British and the Americans to avoid a wider war that Germany could not win. He must ensure a homeland in Palestine for the Jews, in order to avoid a wider slaughter in Europe. And he must somehow prevent the radical, old-guard Nazis from retaking control of the government and bringing the entire nation down in flames.

Continuing the saga of a man who is tormented by a past he cannot know, and terrified by a future he can no longer predict.

Contract Job
James Fieser
12/27/2017, Science Fiction

Seattle native Earl James Jackson, ‘Jack’ to his friends, was just looking to go back to work. He’d finally admitted to himself that he’d been spending far too much time and money soaking up jazz and booze down in the city’s tourist-oriented Pioneer Square district. Moping around like he’d been doing since his last contract tanked wasn’t paying the bills, and his back-up funds were closing in on negative numbers. So he decided he was ready for just about any contract gig he was offered; short of anything illegal or immoral, of course. Well, a guy’s gotta have certain limits.

No way, however, did he imagine that this assignment would involve chasing down a paranoid-psychotic mad-scientist-from-the-future killer among the gold fields of 1852 California. Sure, he’d had three or four remote site contracts as a Field Engineer, but this gig was going to be a way out in the booneys. Why not, though? The pay was incredible, the benny’s even better, and it was damn certain he wouldn’t be falling asleep from boredom at his desk.

Thing was, except for the very real possibility of an extremely long and very cold dirt-nap, he might not get much rest at all.
