Cold Summer
Gwen Cole, @GwenCole_
5/2/2017, Young Adult, Fantasy

Today, he’s a high school dropout with no future.

Tomorrow, he’s a soldier in World War II.

Kale Jackson has spent years trying to control his time-traveling ability but hasn’t had much luck. One day he lives in 1945, fighting in the war as a sharpshooter and helplessly watching soldiers—friends—die. Then the next day, he’s back in the present, where WWII has bled into his modern life in the form of PTSD, straining his relationship with his father and the few friends he has left. Every day it becomes harder to hide his battle wounds, both physical and mental, from the past.

When the ex-girl-next-door, Harper, moves back to town, thoughts of what could be if only he had a normal life begin to haunt him. Harper reminds him of the person he was before the PTSD, which helps anchor him to the present. With practice, maybe Kale could remain in the present permanently and never step foot on a battlefield again. Maybe he can have the normal life he craves.

But then Harper finds Kale’s name in a historical article—and he’s listed as a casualty of the war. Is Kale’s death inevitable? Does this mean that, one of these days, when Kale travels to the past, he may not come back?

Kale knows now that he must learn to control his time-traveling ability to save himself and his chance at a life with Harper. Otherwise, he’ll be killed in a time where he doesn’t belong by a bullet that was never meant for him.

Gold Star (Gold Star, Book 1)
Ray Ouellette
5/2/2017, Science Fiction

When an attack during World War II claims the life of Sergeant Charles Belanger, he leaves behind a wife and a young son. Devastated by the loss of his father, Charles’ son, John Paul, becomes closed off and distant, and he withdraws from his family. In an effort to lift his grandson’s spirits, John Paul’s grandfather, “Nap,” comes up with a “plan.” He builds a mock-up time machine for his grandson, and makes a promise that together they’d work on this “time machine”, and research time travel, until they are able to go back and rescue John Paul’s father.

Nap, an electricity hobbyist, sees his white lie turn to reality when, during an experiment with electromagnets, a stray bolt of lightning causes a coffee cup to jump forward in time ten minutes. This discovery leads to a research grant from Nap’s friend—congressional candidate John Fitzgerald Kennedy, and, over the next fifteen years, Nap’s once far-fetched time travel idea blossoms into a program capable of sending a man backward or forward in time.

As the time travel project progresses, and John Paul grows up, the circumstances of his life and the lives of those around him change. He begins to wonder whether saving his father is really the right thing to do. Will he choose to go back and save him, or will he finally have to come to terms with and accept his father’s death?

Gold Star is a realistic look at how time travel development might actually occur. Set during the Forties through the Sixties, the novel deals with the repercussions of Nap’s time travel project, and how they affect not only the lives and relationships of those involved, but also the fate of the entire world.

The Jane Austen Project
Kathleen A. Flynn, @AustenProject
5/2/2017, Science Fiction/Historical Fantasy

Perfect for fans of Jane Austen, this engrossing debut novel offers an unusual twist on the legacy of one of the world’s most celebrated and beloved authors: two researchers from the future are sent back in time to meet Jane and recover a suspected unpublished novel.

London, 1815: Two travelers—Rachel Katzman and Liam Finucane—arrive in a field in rural England, disheveled and weighed down with hidden money. Turned away at a nearby inn, they are forced to travel by coach all night to London. They are not what they seem, but rather colleagues who have come back in time from a technologically advanced future, posing as wealthy West Indies planters—a doctor and his spinster sister. While Rachel and Liam aren’t the first team from the future to “go back,” their mission is by far the most audacious: meet, befriend, and steal from Jane Austen herself.

Carefully selected and rigorously trained by The Royal Institute for Special Topics in Physics, disaster-relief doctor Rachel and actor-turned-scholar Liam have little in common besides the extraordinary circumstances they find themselves in. Circumstances that call for Rachel to stifle her independent nature and let Liam take the lead as they infiltrate Austen’s circle via her favorite brother, Henry.

But diagnosing Jane’s fatal illness and obtaining an unpublished novel hinted at in her letters pose enough of a challenge without the continuous convolutions of living a lie. While her friendship with Jane deepens and her relationship with Liam grows complicated, Rachel fights to reconcile the woman she is with the proper lady nineteenth-century society expects her to be. As their portal to the future prepares to close, Rachel and Liam struggle with their directive to leave history intact and exactly as they found it…however heartbreaking that may prove.

It quickly becomes evident that the perpetrator has much more significant plans than merely using time travel for smuggling when an invasion fleet of heavily armed starships approaches Earth in 2509. All of humanity is overshadowed by this threat, including the colonies in other sectors of space.

With the survival of humanity resting on their shoulders, William and Luke must find a way to fight this enemy who has more advanced time travel technology than even Temporal Security. And there’s also the question of the admiral’s wife, Larissa, who seems to know more about what’s going on than she’s willing to say.

A Sci- Fi Action adventure sprinkled with the legendary Music of The Beatles

Meet quirky Kalantha Kirby, humble Central Park worker- so busy helping others and engrossed with her sci-fi hobbies and Beatles music and not really realizing what was about to happen to her –

Absolutely everyone in the Diner backed off and away from them, cramming into the farthest corner from where they were standing, from this person she couldn’t see, Kalantha, and Ringo. The person, Olin Cian, started to quickly drag Kalantha out of the diner, Ringo following.

It was a rather hysterical sight: it looked like some funny comedy slapstick routine, as he was moving so fast she was almost stumbling with those flip-flops she had on. They were now in the middle of the decrepit street. Kalantha was warily resisting, scared out of her mind at what was going on…

Stranded in Regency England with nothing but my apartment key, my watch, and a Taser. If only I hadn’t gone to that party. I met a cute guy in a back room, and he actually talked to me. We discussed Zheng He, Plutarch’s Lives, and Einstein’s “little book.”

But just when I started hoping he’d ask me out, he offered me a summer job. I should’ve been suspicious Monday morning when the office door clanged shut behind me, locking me in a cylindrical metal room with a bunch of suited men and one grinning cowboy. I knew they were insane when the cute guy handed me a Taser and an embroidered handkerchief and told me my trial run would take place two hundred years in the past. I tried to leave, but the cute guy smiled, opened the door, and shoved me through an ellipse of blinding light.

Time Travel at the Movies
Isaac M. Steinholz
5/27/2017, 58 pages, Non-Fiction

Time Travel At The Movies lays bare the confusing timelines at play in 12 Monkeys, Back To The Future and Terminator movies.

For the first time you will understand just how many timelines operate throughout the entire set of five Terminator movies, or be dazzled by startling time travel facts about Back To The Future. Did you realize, for example, that on November 5, 1955 there were four versions of the same DeLorean in Hill Valley concurrently (one buried in the Delgado mine, one belonging to Marty from the first film, one taken by Biff to give his younger self the almanac, and the one driven by the Doc so that Marty can destroy the almanac).

I’m sure you would be interested to learn whether Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys uses multiple timelines or just a single timeline theory. Great sci-fi movies often play with the chronology of events, or have conflicting timelines that keep minds occupied for days, months or even years. These films subvert a linear chronological framework and require great explanations from great men. I’ve plotted every significant event in each film of Back To The Future, 12 Monkeys and Terminator and placed them within their timelines in the correct places. I’ve even plotted timelines that must have happened but were never shown.
