A Time and a Place
Joe Mahoney
10/1/2017, Young Adult, Science Fiction

Barnabus’s nephew is behaving oddly.

Calling upon Doctor Humphrey for assistance has not been particularly helpful, because the good doctor’s diagnosis of demonic possession is clearly preposterous. Even the demon currently ensconced on the front room couch agrees it’s preposterous. But then, how else to explain the portal to another world through which his nephew and Humphrey have just now disappeared? Barnabus knows their only chance of rescue is for Barnabus J. Wildebear himself to step up and go through that portal.

Thus begins an existential romp across space and time, trampling on Barnabus’ assumptions about causality, freewill, identity, good and evil. Can Barnabus save his nephew—and incidentally, all of humanity?

Tareus joins the guard and is partnered with Cael, a hyperactive boy from the other side of town. He meets Haven, a girl so fair she gives silk a new synonym, and a friendship turns to romance.

Tareus discovers it isn’t just criminal’s minds they are erasing. Anyone speaking against Parthas’s leaders are cast out. When he witnesses one of these arrests, he fights back, and is given the same punishment of those he was trying to protect.

One problem: He remembers everything. Tareus escapes to Revere colony and meets Quin, the young, beautiful leader (love triangle, anyone?). Orthogonal Procedures
Adam Rothstein
10/3/2017, Young Adult, Science Fiction

Everything you are about to read is true. Mostly.

After US Postmaster Theodore Roosevelt showed the Nazis who was boss in 1942, the Postal Bureau–part of the Department of Transportation–ushered in an era of scientific marvels: simulcast via satellite, sub-orbital transnational flights, dazzle pistols, and electromagnetic driverless cars. However, long-simmering feuds between the Shamans of Commerce and the Wizards of Technology were not forgotten, and it isn’t until the age of Sputnik and the Space Race that the secret organizations buried deep within the US Weather Service and Census Bureau make their move against the Department of Transportation. To regain control of the Administration, they’ll need to rely on older–more esoteric–technologies: astrology, blood rituals, and strange creatures long thought extinct.

It’s up to G-man Fred Mackey of the Electromagnetic Bureau, Domestic Interference Engineering Section, to figure out how to science America back on track. With the assistance of the enigmatic Assistant Secretary for Innovation and the world’s leading specialist in rocket science and all-around occultnik, Mackey tackles the byzantine bureaucracy of a vast government conspiracy that extends from deep space to deep beneath the earth.

Welcome to 1970. This is the history you were never taught . . .

Six Months, Three Days, Five Others
Charlie Jane Anders
10/3/2017, Short Story Collection, Absurdist Science Fiction/Fantasy

Before the success of her debut SF-and-fantasy novel All the Birds in the Sky, Charlie Jane Anders was a rising star in SF and fantasy short fiction. Collected in a mini-book format, here―for the first time in print―are six of her quirky, wry, engaging best:

In “The Fermi Paradox Is Our Business Model,” aliens reveal the terrible truth about how humans were created―and why we’ll never discover aliens.

“As Good as New” is a brilliant twist on the tale of three wishes, set after the end of the world.

“Intestate” is about a family reunion in which some attendees aren’t quite human anymore―but they’re still family.

“The Cartography of Sudden Death” demonstrates that when you try to solve a problem with time travel, you now have two problems.

“Six Months, Three Days” is the story of the love affair between a man who can see the one true foreordained future, and a woman who can see all the possible futures. They’re both right, and the story won the 2012 Hugo Award for Best Novelette.

And “Clover,” exclusively written for this collection, is a coda to All the Birds in the Sky, answering the burning question of what happened to Patricia’s cat.

That’s not to say things have been easy: Will suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and Mara has debilitating chronic pain from her gunshot wound. Despite it all, they feel lucky to be alive and even luckier to be in love.

Then a new initiative from the Justice Department offers Will and Mara the chance of a lifetime. The shooter has been rehabilitated and his crime qualifies for a timeline rectification. With Will and Mara’s consent, they can all travel through time back to the original scene of the crime, giving the gunman a chance to put things right.

It sounds like a dream come true, but both Will and Mara have their doubts. Timeline rectification—called “time wrecking” by its critics—is at the center of a politically charged debate. Will and Mara aren’t entirely sure where they fall on this issue and the clock is ticking for them to decide. Is it moral to change time for the rest of the world, just to undo one crime? Is it moral to deny the gunman a chance to correct his past crimes? And what if this one ripple means that they never meet . . . or fall in love?

  1. Wow so many good looking books! They will keep my kids busy for at least a month LOL. They are currently reading a historical mystery called The Fourth Ruby by James Hannibal, they absolutely love it. Apparently it’s part of a series but obviously can be read alone as my kids have been doing. thelostpropertyoffice.com is his site for the series and the book.
