Timeless Season 2: Episode 3 – “Hollywoodland”

The Time Team returned this week looking for Rittenhouse sleeper agents in Tinseltown, 1941. It was also the highly anticipated romantic kiss between Lucy and Wyatt that momentarily warmed the hearts of #Lyatt / #Wucy shippers.

We see how Rittenhouse plants their sleeper agents at the beginning of this episode. A man is talking to his son behind the then famous “Hollywoodland” sign, telling him to stick to the plan and remember his training. Fifteen years pass and the father returns, surprising his son, who since worked his way up to Producer at RKO. He tells his son that Nicholas Keynes was plucked out of WWI and he’s more brilliant than they could have hoped. He tells him Nicholas mapped out plans for them and it’s time for him to finally play his part.

Jiya continues to have visions of Rufus that appears he’s in the past, but he hasn’t gone to yet. She passes out and Agent Christopher finds her, which happens to be the first time she’s heard of Jiya’s condition. Connor Mason mentions it could be reentry issues, like astronauts coming back from space sickness. Jiya admits she doesn’t believe she’s hallucinating, but doesn’t explain what she’s seeing. The bell saved her when the Mothership jumped to January 2, 1941 in Las Angeles.

Nobody can think of why Rittenhouse would want in Hollywood, 1941. Lucy knows Hitler is in power and Europe is engulfed in WWII. Lucy suggests she knows somebody who might know what Rittenhouse is after.

Agent Christopher and Lucy showed up to Flynn being treated for a stab wound. He knows they’re only there to ask him more of what he knows about Rittenhouse. He made a compromise of information for his release. He tells them Rittenhouse will keep sending someone until he’s dead. Lucy tells Flynn she can get him out as long as he tells them what Rittenhouse wants in 1941, Los Angeles. He questioned why he should trust her and she tells him, “because as much as you need us, we need you more.” I am excited to see where this season goes as the Time Team works together with Flynn to take on Rittenhouse.

The Time Team went back to Hollywood, 1941. Since living in the bunker they have little access to their instant wardrobe like they use to. Upon arriving, they steal clothes from a department store and Rufus asks, “So is this how we do [it] now? Steal clothes like we’re Winona Ryder pre-Stranger Things?”

Rufus and Wyatt question if they can trust Flynn with the drawing he provided them. They stumbled upon Paramount Pictures as the drawing appears to represent the image that Flynn saw on a Rittenhouse agent. Wyatt questions what Rittenhouse wants with the show business. So they’re trying to find sleeper agents who are hiding in plain sight.

The Time Team immediately run into trouble when the security guard finds them and asks who they are. Rufus uses the alias of Langston Hughes, saying he was there to see the president of the studio, Barney Balaban. The security guard immediately takes them to office where Rufus pretends to have written a comedy play based of his book, The Ways of White Folks.

Barney steps out of his office to meet “Langston” and his actors Logan and Preston. Rufus tries pitching Hamilton as a musical but Barney said it would never work. So the three try poking around by vaguely asking about Rittenhouse in a movie pitching way, but soon realize Barney is not working for Rittenhouse.

Hedy Lemarr walks into Barney’s office complaining about the writing. Barney introduces Hedy to the team and Lucy is about to fangirl. Barney asked Hedy if she was going to the Beverly House tonight in which she says George was making her go. Barney suddenly gets a call that RKO 281 was stolen.

Lucy tells Wyatt and Rufus about the secrecy of RKO 281, which was the codename for Citizen Kane. Orson Welles was literally cutting and taping the film together piece by piece until the last second. Wyatt questioned if the movie went missing, originally. Lucy knows it had not in a previous timeline. Why would Rittenhouse want to destroy Citizen Kane? Lucy informed them that William Randolph Hearst, a newspaper owner with over 20 million readers, originally wanted Citizen Kane killed because the movie was essentially about him and his mistress. Lucy figured they can find him at the Beverly House party as that is the nickname for Hearst’s Beverly Hills mansion.

Wyatt breaks into a costume department to find clothes for the Beverly House party. Lucy and Rufus discuss that although Hedy Lemarr was most famously known for her nude role in a 1930s movie, she is actually an intelligent scientist. She patented frequency hopping for radio torpedoes, basically inventing Wi-Fi. She let the patent expire in ’59 and the United States Navy used it in ’62, never allowing her to see a penny from it.

The two father and son Rittenhouse agents now have the RKO 281 hidden in the trunk of a car. The father discusses to his son that once this mission was over that he’d be coming home, as he’s needed for other missions.

Meanwhile Agent Christopher called a doctor to have Jiya examined. We find out that Jiya doesn’t like doctors. She lost her father to pancreatic cancer two months after complaining of back pain. She tells them if there’s something wrong with her that she’d rather not find out.

The Time Team tries thinking of a plan to get inside the Beverly House, let alone find Citizen Kane and who has it. For as much as they know the host could be Rittenhouse himself. Wyatt notices there’s more security in Hollywood than Nazi Germany, as Rufus says and just as many black people..

Hedy Lemarr shows up and immediately is drawn to “Langston” and walks into the party with Rufus. The three get in and Hedy is quickly onto Rufus after hearing him recite the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song. He brings Hedy over to Lucy and Wyatt to admit that Hearst stole Citizen Kane and Orson Welles sent them personally to get the film. Hedy notices Hearst leaving with producer Lucas Calhoun, who is about to produce Jurassic Park way before its time.

As Lucy and Wyatt were about to follow the two men upstairs, Barney Balaban wanted to hear a song by the duet. They both panic but Wyatt insists Lucy only sings so their cover doesn’t get blown. Lucy sings “You Make Me Love You” and as she performs, her and Wyatt passionately look at each other the entire time.

Rufus and Hedy were able to sneak off and spy on Hearst and Lucas from outside the room. I loved Rufus and Hedy’s bonding in this episode as they can relate to each other on so many levels.

Meanwhile Agent Christopher is wondering where Jiya is. Connor Mason is upset she had not listen to Jiya for not wanting to see a doctor. He tells Agent Christopher he’s known the prognosis all along because after test piloting the Lifeboat. Two other pilots suffered the same severe health problems afterwards. He is upset Jiya ever got in the Lifeboat knowing the strict rules for only three people at a time. When Agent Christopher asks what happened to the other pilots, Mason informs her one is being treated for severe schizophrenia and the other died of a brain aneurysm. However, when Jiya saw the doctor she was completely healthy that her heart murmur was somehow cured. Her brain is fine and her heart is fixed. But is she being truthful or telling us a lie to stay off her case?

Hedy and George found Lucy, Rufus, and Wyatt walking and offered them a ride back to her place. She takes Rufus off to see her room of inventions and she tells the “lovebirds” to make themselves comfortable.

Lucy and Wyatt finish a drink by the pool and start opening up to each other. Wyatt tells Lucy she saved his life in which she asked which time as she had helped him on several trips. He admits to taking the job because it was dangerous after he lost Jessica. They go back inside where things start to heat up and the long awaited kiss finally brings the two together.

The next morning Lucy and Wyatt wake up in bed together. With a short season the writers are moving right along with bringing them together. As they start discussing what they’re going to tell everybody, Rufus stumbles in. He is just as shocked and makes his way out the door.

As Wyatt and Rufus wait for Lucy to find new clothes, Rufus asked Wyatt how his night was. “I won’t tell anyone except for Jiya. Is it happening?” Rufus questioned Wyatt as he and Lucy had done previously over his and Jiya’s relationship.

Once they saw Lucas leave, they followed him to the studio where he was attempting to steal the six reels of film. A security guard followed them in the building which resulted in him being shot and killed. Lucas can’t believe he’s spent the past fifteen years living out this plan for it to it fail now. However, Wyatt shoots and kills him them Rufus grabs the film. There is nothing the three of them can do about the security guard who was killed, so they got away before police arrived.

Meanwhile Agent Christopher went back to give Flynn a piece of paper in which she said was a bad idea. She hates to admit that they need his help.

Rufus gives Hedy the film to give back to Orson Welles. He suggests she not let her patent expire. He meets up with Lucy and Wyatt who is hot wiring a car to get them out of there.

They drive to the jail where Flynn is currently locked in, except it’s just being built. They take out a brick and leave a package for Flynn to find during present day. Alarms go off and the jail starts filling with gas. Flynn puts his mask on and is able to escape.

Once back at the bunker they are sitting around enjoying themselves until Flynn showed up. Wyatt told them to keep Flynn on a leash and left the room. Lucy stops Wyatt to comfort him. As they start reminiscing about the other night Wyatt’s phone goes off. He starts checking his phone and tells Lucy he’ll be right back.

Rufus calls Lucy over to tell her about Hedy Lemarr taking his advice on not letting the patent expire. Had it been a true story she would’ve made over $30 billion! Suddenly the alarms go off and, as Agent Christopher warned, somebody broke in. As they all follow her lead she opens the door to find that somebody had actually escaped instead of breaking in.

Wyatt shows up to a bar restaurant. He sees a woman at the cash register then walked over to the table she was cleaning. He says Jessica out loud and she turns around. He is in complete shock. He hugs her and as she hugs him back she definitely doesn’t appear to be as happy.

Does she only remember their fight last? What does she remember? Why is she there all of a sudden? Many speculations that she could be involved with Rittenhouse in some way. It seems as though the #Lyatt / #Wucy ships are hitting rough waters.
