Timeless Season 2: Episode 8 – The Day Reagan was Shot

Previously, on Timeless…

Remember when Agent Denise Christopher gave Lucy a flashdrive in case anything happened to Denise’s wife and children? She worried that if Rittenhouse changed something in the past, Denise wouldn’t even know they existed and she wanted to know who they were.

In The Day Reagan was Shot, we find out why and how the Time Team wasn’t put together by chance.

Rittenhouse jumps to March 30, 1981 and our Time Team, plus Jiya, goes after them before Denise arrives at the bunker. When she asks where the team went and Flynn and Connor tell her, she knows immediately why Rittenhouse picked that day.

Rufus, Jiya, Wyatt, and Lucy arrive at the hotel where John Hinckley, Jr. waits to shoot Reagan, but when Wyatt sees a laser pointed at the back of a police officer, he pushes her out of the way as shots are fired. Reagan is shot, Hinckley gets away and they meet a young Denise Christopher (Played by Karen David), who’s been wounded.

Immediately, our heroes realize Rittenhouse’s plan to take out Denise will prevent the team from ever meeting.

They all head to the hospital where Rufus and Wyatt capture the Rittenhouse agent before he makes it to Denise’s room. Lucy and Jiya visit Denise where they also meet her mother, who encourages her daughter to quit the police force and accept the marriage her family has arranged for her.

Once Denise is released, Jiya and Lucy (going by Cagney and Lacy) tell her who tried to kill Reagan, saying they were hired by the actress (Jodie Foster) he was obsessed with. The three head to the hotel where he hid out. As they wait for the manager, Lucy and Jiya explain to Denise that it’s okay to be who she is (lesbian) and she should continue her work on the police force instead of accept the arranged marriage and quit to stay at home. Unnerved that the women would even know about her deepest secret, Denise waves them off, saying she wants to respect her family’s wishes and what she wants isn’t what’s possible.

Wyatt and Rufus have the Rittenhouse agent, who immediately confesses everything. He says his family was threatened and that if he doesn’t do what they say, they’ll kill his wife and children. Wyatt isn’t totally convinced, but Rufus is unnerved by it.

With the information Denise obtains by getting into Hinckley’s hotel room, she’s able to turn that into her police chief and the manhunt for Hinckley is on. She tells Lucy and Jiya thank you for the insight, but she has a commitment to her family.

Back in the present, Denise is at the bunker working until Flynn asks her what she’s doing there. She snaps, saying she can’t do anything about what Rittenhouse’s push into place, so she’s keeping busy. He asks her again, but more specifically, “What are you doing…here? Go home. Be with your family.”

The Rittenhouse agent tells Wyatt and Rufus that his brother is also involved and if he can’t finish the job, his brother will. They get the address and head over to keep him from killing Denise.

Lucy and Jiya decide to show Denise who and what she’ll miss if she marries and quits the police force. They have the flash drive and play her the photos and videos of Denise’s life, her wife, her children. Lucy pleads with Denise, telling her how complicated family can be, but this will be her life if she stays true to herself.

Now, the Rittenhouse agent’s outside Denise’s home.

This is nerve-wracking because they go back and forth between Denise entering her home and the Rittenhouse agent taking aim.

Will she have her family? Will she make a different choice?

He can’t get a good shot and he exits his car, standing in the middle of the street.

Bad idea since Wyatt unapologetically runs him over.

The universe is safe once more!

After 37 years of holding the secret, Agent Christopher (Sakina Jaffrey) thanks Wyatt (Matt Lanter) for twice saving her life.

When the Time Team returns, Wyatt’s the first to exit the Lifeboat. He’s greeted by Denise who says, “I’ve been waiting 37 years to say this. Thank you.”

Now we know why she picked Wyatt for the team.

The episode ends with Wyatt and Jessica talking. She mentions her brother and Wyatt raises an eyebrow. He tells her in the previous timeline, her brother died when he was three from cancer.

She explains that he did get sick, but they tried a new treatment “probably stem cell” (which didn’t exist at the time) saved him.

Wyatt’s not buying it. He knows something is wrong.

When Wyatt asked how her family got the money, she shrugs and then drops a bombshell….she’s pregnant. (But is she really?)

Get ready for the season finale. It’s gonna be a wild ride!
