Timeless Season 1: Episode 16 – The Red Scare

Our last episode of the season opens with Garcia Flynn (Goran Visnjic) intently looking around, gun in hand. He reports the all clear and we see a woman and child smiling at him. He’s holding a water gun and reports there are no monsters to his daughter and wife.

He promises to protect them and they are share a tender moment before he wakes up as Emma walks in.

Karl and another one of the crew have bailed, despite Flynn saying it’s only one more mission. That all of Rittenhouse will be in one room in 1954.

When Flynn asks Emma if she wants out as well, she says she just wants to make sure he doesn’t plan to kill her like he did Anthony.

Rufus has gotten them back to the present, but he’s still bleeding and not fairing too well. He’s afraid to go to the hospital because Rittenhouse will find them.

Lucy calls Noah (her ex-fiance), who comes over and helps, but he wants answers.

Lucy says she can’t give him any and that he deserves to be with someone who makes him happy.

When he asks her “it’s because of that guy, isn’t it?” she immediately denies she has anything to do with Wyatt. But we can see it, Noah can see it. She’s got feelings for Wyatt and just now realized it.

Noah leaves and I’m kind of sad for him. Seemed like a nice guy.

Agent Christopher and Jiya have arrived.

Flynn has jumped to Washington DC 1954. Wyatt wants them to go, Lucy wonders if she should let Flynn take care of Rittenhouse and be done with it.

Rufus is weak and can’t stand, much less drive. Jiya says she can be his co-pilot, but the Lifeboat is only made to transport three people, not four.

As they discuss how to chase Flynn, Rittenhouse arrives and they have few options.

Lucy, Rufus, Wyatt, and Jiya load up in the Lifeboat and take off as Agent Christopher tells them she can hold them off.

The Time Team plus Jiya jumps as the doors are rammed open. Agent Nevell struts in with Connor Mason at his side. Agent Christopher stands her ground like the badass she is.

She’s now been arrested and Mason taunts her for being a jerk to him a few days before.

The Time Team is in a barn in Washington DC, 1954. Lucy says they need to start with Joe McCarthy since he’s certainly the Rittenhouse type. At that time he was neck deep in hearings, trying to find communists pretty much any and everywhere, accusing anyone he could get away with and basically pissing off a whole lot of people.

Switch to McCarthy’s office and who’s there, but Garcia Flynn. He’s offering to give McCarthy a couple of communist spies for information about Rittenhouse. Of course, McCarthy says he has no idea who that is, but he’s a terrible liar.

Flynn demands the address of the meeting or he’s going to tell everyone how McCarthy faked his 32 air missions and isn’t worthy of the military award on the wall.

Being the humble man he was (HA!) McCarthy says everyone’s trying to attack him, enemies everywhere, but Flynn doesn’t care. He wants the address and he gets it, even with McCarthy telling him he won’t defeat Rittenhouse.

As promised, Flynn hands over the “spies” and it’s photos of Lucy and Wyatt.

As Lucy and Wyatt are walking up the Captial steps, they are arrested for being Communist spies.

Jiya and Rufus are hanging out in the barn, when Rufus notices Jiya’s eye is red like she’s popped a blood vessel in it. He’s worried she’s having trouble because they put too many people in the Lifeboat, but Jiya isn’t worried.

Lucy’s alone in a conference room when Flynn walks in. He tells her “her Wyatt” is fine. (Lyatt I tell you!), but he’s going to destroy Rittenhouse tonight, which will include her grandfather, Ethan Cahill. He’s telling her that he’s not sure what will happen to her, but it’s “probably not good.”

She asks him why he’s telling her this and how tired she is of the game, that people keep dying and “for what?” After telling him he’s broken person who misses the people he loves, Flynn bites back, saying she knows nothing about his family.

She offers to help him defeat Rittenhouse, but has no plan.

Flynn says good-bye and leaves.

Wyatt sits in a room as McCarthy struts in. He berates Wyatt and insists he tell what he know and who he’s working for. Wyatt shakes his head and calls McCarthy a fraud and a coward, which he was. Of course, McCarthy doesn’t like that, insists that the two officers in the room teach Wyatt some manners, but Wyatt being the hero he is, beats the crap out of them. He gets Lucy and they leave and decide to follow Ethan Cahill, Lucy’s grandfather, to the Rittenhouse summit.

We’re now back at Time Travel Center. Agent Christopher stands in a room alone when Connor Mason comes in. She tells him he can gloat all he wants, but he asks her to come with him. That he’s disabled the cameras and the guards still work for him. She’s cautious, but he asks her again and she takes a chance.

They walk into a room that has one huge wall to wall monitor. Apparently, Rittenhouse gave Mason an all access pass to the NSA’s servers and he’s been doing his homework. He’s found enough evidence to convict Benjamin Cahill “seven times over.”

Agent Christopher is confused. “Why are you telling me all this?”

“Because you’re dull, but honest and now you can take this to the dull, honest authorities,” Mason replies. He also explains that once Jiya can pilot the Lifeboat, Rittenhouse plans to eliminate Rufus. Mason admits he knows who he is and will get what he deserves, but “Rufus deserves better.”

Lucy and Wyatt have stolen a car and follow Ethan Cahill to a private club. When they walk in, they notice there are only men there, which may not seem like a big deal. There were clubs back then that were men only, but there’s flirting and drink buying and as Wyatt put it, “Is it just me or is Rittenhouse way more gay than I thought it would be.”

Lucy states, “I don’t think this is the Rittenhouse Summit, I think this is a gay bar.”

“Then what is your grandpa…oh!” Wyatt’s eyes go wide with understanding.

Rufus is trying to reach Wyatt and Lucy, but no one is answering over the radios. Jiya tells him to calm down or he’s going to bust his stitches. She shows him her resolved eye and everything seems great, until she passes out. Rufus catches her.

Lucy and Wyatt approach Ethan Cahill. He denies who he is or what they think they might have seen here, but when they tell him they aren’t cops and know he’s got a family at home, he asks them what they want. Lucy states, “We need you to take us to the Rittenhouse Summit.”

Back to Rufus and Jiya. He’s holding her in his arms, talking so sweetly to her, telling her that every time he almost died, he’d think of her. He wanted to tell her that he loves her but he’d get back fine and chicken out. Rufus begs for her to hold on and he’ll quit holding back.

For a moment, it looks like she’s waking up, but instead, she’s having what looks like a seizure, completely freaking Rufus out.

Lucy’s driving Ethan and Wyatt to the Rittenhouse Summit. Ethan tells her she looks familiar and she replies that her father is in Rittenhouse.

He asks about Flynn and why he wants to kill Rittenhouse. Lucy states that Rittenhouse killed Flynn’s family.

Ethan doesn’t blink with this news, which is a bit concerning, but he says if Rittenhouse knows his secret, they’ll kill him too.

He begins crying, saying he loves his family, but it’s a sick habit (going to the gay bar), that he’s tried electric shock therapy to be cured. Lucy cuts him off. She tells him there’s nothing wrong with him. Wyatt agrees.

Ethan tells when he was 18, his father catching him (Ethan) with a (boy) friend. His dad beat him with a belt for an hour, then told him about Rittenhouse. After hearing about the group, Ethan said he’d rather be beaten again than be a part of it. He said, if Flynn destroys them, he might have to thank Flynn for it.

They arrive and Ethan helps them get inside.

Flynn is alone and strapped enough C4 to the columns of the cellar to collapse the building. When Wyatt pulls a gun on Flynn, Lucy stands between the two men. She convinces Flynn not to blow the place to high heaven because she’s figured out how to stop Rittenhouse. He agrees and both Wyatt and Flynn drop their guns.

Wyatt, Flynn, Lucy, and Ethan arrive at the warehouse. Rufus insists they have to get back because of Jiya. Lucy tells Ethan they are time travelers from 2017 and he thinks they are joking.

Lucy tells Wyatt and Rufus to get Jiya back, she’ll go back with Flynn in the Mothership. Wyatt refuses, telling Lucy, “I can’t lose you again.”

“You’ve trusted me until now. Trust me a little longer,” she explains and Wyatt reluctantly agrees. (Seriously, if there’s not a Lyatt in season 2, I’m gonna be annoyed. The chemistry between these two is off the charts.)

Wyatt, Rufus, and Jiya take off and Ethan watches, slackjawed.

Lucy admits she’s his granddaughter and he smiles, saying she’s the spitting image of a younger version of his mom.

Flynn and Lucy tell him that Rittenhouse will get their hands on the time machine and do awful things with it and Ethan asks what he can do to help. That no one will be able to take down Rittenhouse.

She says she’ll explain it to him, but he will have to live a double life as he continues to be part of the group. He agrees and it fades to a present day version of Ethan, sitting by a fire.

Lucy and Wyatt arrive and he’s so thankful they are there. He gives them the information he promised which is an entire room full of evidence on Rittenhouse.

As Lucy and Wyatt go through files, Connor Mason and Agent Christopher arrive. Mason holds his hands up in surrender when Wyatt pulls a gun and Agent Christopher verifies that Mason is on their side. When Agent Christopher looks around, she says it will take years to sort the information, but Mason says his software can do it in hours. All he needs are the names.

Jiya is in the hospital and Rufus arrives. Out the window, the Golden Gate Bridge is shining in the background.

They plan to watch the A-Team, Season 2 when Jiya admits she could hear what Rufus said back in 1954 and loves him too.

After an ultra swoonworthy, kiss, Jiya does this scary eye roll thing and we see her vision of the Golden Gate Bridge is destroyed and now it’s back in one piece. She stops her eyeroll thing and none of us know what’s up.

Back at Time Travel Central, Agent Christopher arrives with dull but honest security detail and everyone is arrested, including Benjamin Cahill and Agent Nevell.

Flynn and Lucy meet and she hands him a flashdrive of the person who ordered the hit on Flynn’s wife and daughter as well as the men who did it. She tells him to take one last trip to save his family, then destroy the ship. That this is over.

He hands her back her journal and they plan to part ways when Agent Christopher and SWAT arrive, taking Flynn into custody.

Back at Time Travel Central, they are prepping the Lifeboat for one more mission. Agent Christopher promises Flynn will be tried by the book. She also tells Lucy to take the Lifeboat out one more time to get her mom and the guy who fathered her sister together.

Before they leave, Lucy and Wyatt discuss their time together and what they will do when the last mission is complete. She expresses concern for him not being able to get his Jessica back and he tells Lucy maybe he should be open to new possibilities. We all hold our breath as they stare longingly at each other, but Mason (thanks Mason) ruins the moment when he walks by to tell them that the Lifeboat will be ready in three hours.

Lucy tells Wyatt she’ll be back in an hour, that she has to take care of something.

As she leaves, he watches her walk away. (And we all know what that means.)

Lucy comes home to her mom and confesses she’s been on time travel missions. That she had a sister, Amy, and she’s going to get her back. She adds when Amy existed, her mother was sick. (If you don’t remember why, her mother was a smoker because Amy’s dad also smoked.) This time, Lucy is going to do everything in her power to keep from losing her mother.

Her mother listens intently and hugs Lucy, replying, “You won’t lose me. Rittenhouse wouldn’t allow it.”

WHAT? Are you kidding me?

Mom continues on saying Rittenhouse would never allow Lucy to take the Lifeboat out if it would make her (mom) sick “all to get back some girl that no one but you knows or cares about.” (That’s harsh, mom.)

We can see that Lucy’s internally freaking out right now as she listens to her mom talk about how Lucy’s “practically royalty” because her mom and dad’s sides are from good Rittenhouse families. Mom confesses that Rittenhouse has an operative on the Mothership. As she speaks, we see a room full of dead soldiers and Emma leaving on the Mothership.

Mom states that Rittenhouse will soon control the past, present, and future and they will change history…and scene.

What? No! That can’t be it!

So, if that doesn’t get you to watch Season 2 on Sunday, March 11 at 10 EST, I don’t know what will, because I know I’m tuning in.
